Leatherhead Men's 1's - 3: 2 - Spencer Hurricanes - Saturday 15th October 2011

Leatherhead Men’s 1’s Keep Unbeaten Run Going.

Leatherhead Men’s 1st XI kept their unbeaten run going with a 3-2 win against a very strong Spencer Hurricanes side in Saturday’s Surrey Open Hockey League Division 1 encounter. Leatherhead went into the match knowing that this would be one of the toughest sides they would face this season. This was realised very quickly going 0-1 down early in the first half and only having a few striking opportunities, with none on target. However Leatherhead’s excellent defence of Day, Butt, Campbelll, Lowe and new star Seedy, kept the visitors down to just 1 goal going into half time. After a pep talk from Leatherhead’s Captain Higgs at half time, Leatherhead came out in the second half showing their battling spirit which has served them well over the last few weeks and earned a last minute equaliser the previous week against Old Kingstonian’s (4-4).

Leatherhead got the ball moving between players building a spell of sustained pressure. Getting the ball into the D and forcing a deflection that Lowe tried to steer at height but 'dummied', allowing Crumbie to slot the ball into the goal to pull level. With Leatherhead celebrating the equaliser and Spencer disputing the goal, following consultation between the umpires and captains, it was confirmed that the goal stood.Leatherhead then pushed their advantage home with a goal from Captain Higgs placing the ball nicely into the corner from the top of the D. This sudden turnaround in the score caused Spencer to rally and put more pressure onto the strong Leatherhead defence. This pressure eventually paid off when Spencer scored their equaliser beating Matthew Mutter in goal who had kept Spencer down to one until then. The turning point of the game came after a Spencer player was sin binned. Leatherhead used their extra man to great advantage scoring their third. The ball was played out from the back to Burchall on the right wing who made a great run into the D, drawing the keeper out and allowing him to slip a square pass to Crumbie to direct the ball into the open goal for his second. With great work all over the pitch for the rest of the game and having Parekh and Hackett run their socks off, Leatherhead played out to the whistle to secure their second win of the season. Added to their two draws this maintains their unbeaten run in the campaign and edges them to 3rd place in the table.

To start off the new hockey season, Leatherhead Hockey Club is holding an Open Day on Saturday 3rd September from 11am for the men and from 12.00 noon for the ladies. This will take place at the club’s home pitch at Therfield School in Dilston Road, Leatherhead, and will continue at the clubhouse at Oxshott Village Sports Club with a barbeque from 2pm. The Open Day will provide an opportunity to come along play a few mini-games of hockey and find out more about the club.

Leatherhead is a thriving and extremely friendly local club which attracts players of all ages and levels. It runs 3 men’s and 3 ladies’ teams in the Surrey League and has a very popular colts’ section. Training is held on Wednesday evenings throughout the season (Sept to April). League and friendly matches take place on Saturdays and in the past few years, the club has been able to participate in a local Summer League, providing virtually all year round hockey for those members who are available to participate. Leatherhead is the ideal club not just for experienced players but for anyone wishing to try out the game for the first time and equally for those who would like to take it up perhaps after a break.

The club always has a lot going on socially and its members are fun and interesting people from many walks of life. Seasoned players of a good standard and wanting a challenging game each week are greatly welcomed. Equally, many of its members find hockey makes the perfect solution and a sociable way of keeping off the pounds! It is generally never too late to take it up as long as players are in good health and are prepared to work on their fitness levels.

Leatherhead Hockey Club welcomes new members and those interested in playing or umpiring hockey who want to find out more about the club are particularly welcome to attend the Open Day. Leatherhead Hockey Club - A Mum’s View

Hockey Is A Sport For All The Family

Winter weekends tend to be something of a challenge in my household. I have 3 sons who are all sporty. I like to think they take after me...after all, it was me who introduced them to the best sport of all, (not that I am biased!)...hockey of course.

I played hockey all through school, (on grass in those days), and through university, but gave up when I got married. I then took a 15 year break before a colleague at work persuaded me to come down and try the local hockey club in Leatherhead. The rest, as they say, is history.

Despite having had such a long break, I was made very welcome at Leatherhead and was soon playing regularly. That was 7 years ago and I can’t imagine my life without hockey now. I still play in the Ladies 1st Team and I help run the Colts. In fact, I was one of the driving forces behind getting the colts going again as I had 3 sons and was keen to get them involved. As it turned out two of them found they enjoyed it and have stuck with it ever since. My oldest, now 18 plays as Goalkeeper for the Men’s 1st Team and my youngest (15) plays in the Men’s 3rd Team.

As I mentioned, this does make Saturdays a big challenge – getting the 3 of us to our matches which inevitably are at the same time in different places! However, it is definitely worth it. As a mother, I love having a common interest I can share with my children, I try and watch them as often as I can and it always gives us something to talk about. Not only that but the Club is so friendly and diverse we have all made lots of friends and everyone helps out giving lifts when needed, it’s a real ‘community’ atmosphere with a shared passion for hockey at whatever level, whether it be for fun and the social aspect or for the more competitive of us! I can certainly recommend it.
