LHC Round-up - 20th January

Wet week.png

After one game cancelled, another conceded, three loses and 40 drenched players, this week left the club feeling a little glum. But we're made of tougher stuff, so heads up LHC, we’ll get them next week!

M1 faced a tough task against top of the table Trinity. Poor availability, sickness and injury all played a part and we were a goal down within a minute. When we finally got our act together we played some good stuff and posed a threat but were always in danger. One down became two down at the break but we had had our chances too.

Second half saw us carry the fight and trinity repelled all our efforts and picked us off twice more before the end.

Four was a bit harsh and we could have had a couple ourselves.

Next game becomes very important!

MENS 2s (Diablos)

After only being able to rope together a team of eight, the Mens 2 captain decided it better to conceed rather than take the eight to a 4:30pm away game in the glorious British weather. Let's hope they enjoyed a drier afternoon!

Our Mens 3s game was cancelled at the oppositions request.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. And sadly, our seven-week run of league win/draws came to a swift end after we took on EUHC Gamblers London Ladies 1 this weekend. Aware that they are top of the league, 76 goals up after 12 games and were yet to lose a game, we were preparing ourselves for a tough match – and boy did they deliver. I think the record was five goals in 15-mins, but hey, whose counting!

Although the weather dampened our spirit a little, we kept fighting till the very end, with Megan Smith taking the last shot off the game and missing the goal by mere-centimetres. It wasn't the way we saw the game playing out, but then again, it was a great opportunity for defence / goalkeeping practice and as Kat Stanger said, a good game for character building! Since we had nothing to lose in the first place, we're hoping that the baptism of fire will fuel us in our next game against Old Kingstonian Ladies' 2s – who have just overtaken us in the league tables. With six games to go, it's going to be an exciting end to the season!

Many thanks to Linda and Paul Campbell for umpiring, Jules Woollatt for teas, and Sue for managing a punishing substitution schedule!!

Back to 2nd place for the L2s today in a rather grim game at Battersea! We started the day with 14.....then 13.....then it looked like it could be 12 but after a lie down in a dark room we were back to 13! The team started strong with 2 short corners in our favour in the first 5 minutes and the hangovers were well on their way out! Good strikes on target but an annoyingly good GK kept us out of the goal. With a frustrating goal from Wanderers taking us in to half time 1-0 down. Spirits were high..... but the snowmen jelly babies weren’t quite doing their magic this week.

A hard battle for the ladies and some impressive runs from the youngsters and we looked like we might put one or even two past them in the closing stages of the match. They had some strong players on their side though and we were unable to stop them slipping two more past us, a great clearance from Emma Warren-Brown but sadly the deflection came straight back and she was on her back on more than one occasion! A really good team performance again especially given the trek to Battersea and the foul weather! A good game to watch from the sidelines.....dressed as the Michelin man and with a sneaky hot chocolate to warm my cockles - thanks Lorraine! Well done team and great to have a guest performance from alcohol-fuelled Ann-Marie O'Neill! Aim for next week against Horley is to keep the scoreline below seven!
