LHC Annual Open Day and BBQ - 2nd September 2017
Another year, another season. And with the start of every new season comes the annual open day and BBQ to welcome in the new players and let the regular players shake off the summer cobwebs from their hockey sticks. This year - as with every year that has proceeded - saw beautiful sunshine and clear skies but was ultimately a bit too hot for so much running around!
Both the men and ladies played on different AstroTurfs to ensure each team had a full pitch to play with but meet together at the clubhouse to talk Hockey over a barbequed sausage. Here’s how the day unravelled:
Two teams worth of players rocked up at Reeds School making it easier to divide up the ‘squad’ into equal(ish) teams. Once divided, a great game ensued. Despite being encouraged to move the ball early and avoid getting into contact, the chance to "take on" teammates was too strong for Donnie - and as it turned out so was Pete's head! Donnie had to leave the field with a cut eyebrow and was patched up by Colin – nothing like a little drama to start the season! Approach play was generally good with lots of chances being created throughout the game – great work boys. The final score was 3-2 and despite the collision, everybody left on speaking terms.
The ladies, playing down the road at the home pitch at Therfield School, approached the day a little differently. Launching the new season with three short games, the girls entertained themselves with end-to-end action in the dazzling sunshine - what better way to rediscover both the hockey love, as well as those muscles that only this sport can reach. We were very pleased to welcome new members and to see the progress of our juniors, who will be playing in the adult games this season.
All in all, the day was a triumph and a brilliant way to officially start the new season. We would like to extend thanks to Jules, Liz and Bav for organising the day and executing another cracking BBQ to feed the hungry players after their games.
In case you missed the memo, the LHC sizzling sausages represent not only the success of being able to start a BBQ and sustain it through an afternoon, but also that training is back in full swing; every Wednesday at Therfield School, Leatherhead, 8-9:30pm – huzzah! This means we have a couple of weeks to get our muscles working again before the league kicks off on September 23rd (for the ladies) and September 30th (for the men). All details can be found on the Adults Section on the website.
