This year’s end of season celebrations took place at the rather picturesque Denbie’s Vineyard, complete with our own cellar, wine barrels and DJ. Starting promptly at 7:30 the beginning of the evening was dedicated to giant sausages, promiscuous lemon tarts and tiny slices of toast – a good base for the alcohol that was about to follow! Dinner over, our chair and gracious host of the evening Jon Elburn took to the mic to announce the victors of this year’s club awards. Drum rolling on the tables, an anxious table of Hawaiian business men and a trophy swapped for Jon’s own wine glass (with complementary wine), the winners were announced as followed:
Ladies’ 1s players of the year: Sophie Dudgeon and Jess Laslett
Ladies’ 2s player of the year: Sarah Sumpton
Men’s 1s player of the year: Joe ‘Crispy’ Bacon
Men’s 2s player of the year: Graham ‘Strictly’ Williamson
Men’s 3s player of the year: Justin Williams
Mixed player of the year: John 'Wizard' Allen
Umpire of the year: David “Cardmaster” Bavin
Club Man: Shaun ‘Beast’ Hurman
Club Woman: Eloisa 'Rottie' Tovee
Quinn Cup: Ladies 1s
Top scorers: Ladies 1s
Congratulations to everybody who got to take home a little cup, drink champagne out of slightly bigger cup, and/or hold Jon’s wine glass proudly in the air. It was a fantastic evening celebrating 98 league games, 146 goals and five tremendous teams.
LHC isn’t like every other club. We may not have any Olympians among our ranks. We’re not always able to get a full team on pitch and yes, we might get the occasional green card for misplaced enthusiasm. But when it comes to heart and end of season dancing skills, there’s no club that can match us! Thank you to all the players / committee members / umpires / coaches / captains and those mad enough to cheer us on from the sideline, it’s because of you we made it through another season!
Although that's it for the 2017/18 league, do keep an eye on the social calendar for interclub friendlies, mixed games and summer socials. If you're planning on taking the full six months off, we'll see you in September!
