A love for hockey needs to start somewhere! At LHC, we believe the younger the better!
Our youngest members first picked up a hockey stick from the age of 7 and continue playing as a LHC colt until they reach 14. Over these 7 years, our colts are coached by England Hockey qualified coaches learning through engaging games, to maximise fun, touches on the ball, constant decision making as a collective introduction to hockey. This will help them all develop different techniques; game skills and team experience they need to move up to the adult section of the club when ready. This transition may be supported from age 13 through participation in adult training sessions and/or involvement in friendly matches.
Each training session starts with a warm-up. We then spend time on technical skills through multiple mini games, linking sessions over several weeks before finishing with game play.
Our sessions are mixed and are open to all abilities. Having fun is the main aim of each session. Sessions run on Sundays generally from 10:30am-12:00pm in Autumn / Spring running for 5 or 6 weeks either side of the half-terms (20 weeks in total). Session dates for this season will appear here once determined in August 2022 but it is anticipated sessions for 2022-23 will start from Sunday 18th September.
*must be 7 years old on 1st September to start playing in the new season.
Things to know before your first session:
EQUIPMENT:
We appreciate that sometimes you prefer the option to 'try before you buy' so we have hockey sticks available for use until your children find their feet. Existing members must come equipped with shin-pads and gum-shields. For new members, or those wishing to try a session, shin-pads are required but gum shields are optional for the first couple of weeks. All children should bring water/soft drinks (not fizzy!)
CLOTHING:
Please ensure children come appropriately attired - no jewellery, appropriate sports clothing (no jeans) and layers to allow for changes in weather including waterproofs, especially as Autumn/Winter progresses - we DO play in the rain!
SAFEGUARDING INFORMATION:
For more information on how we protect our Colts, please see the club’s Safeguarding Policy, Child Protection Procedures and supporting documents below.
To minimise any potential disruption to a session, please ask your child to go to the bathroom before arriving at each session.
If you have any concerns your child’s welfare attending colts, please discuss with the coach and/or contact the club Welfare Officer via childwelfare@leatherheadhockeyclub.co.uk.
