Leatherhead Frustrated With Draw

Travelling to neighbours Reigate off the back of the previous week’s emphatic victory, Leatherhead should have had confidence to continue their winning form against a side placed below them in the league table. A much changed squad did nothing to allay their efforts but unable to take advantage during long periods of possession and with countless chances resolutely deflected by Reigate’s keeper, Leatherhead came away frustrated with a draw and a share of the league points.

Leatherhead made a positive start and early pressure forced two penalty corners in quick succession, with the strikes flying just wide of either post. Camping out in Reigate’s D, Leatherhead dominated possession and created chances to go ahead, but each strike was thwarted by the host’s busy keeper.

Having barely ventured out of their defensive half, after 25 minutes Reigate made a swift break forward and forced a penalty corner. With the ball sneaking in at the far post from a broken down routine, Reigate broke the deadlock to go 1-0 up, much against the run of play. Leatherhead showed spirit as they looked for an immediate reply and were frustrated not to capitalise on their dominance before the break.

Buoyed by their lead, Reigate took the game to Leatherhead as the second half opened. Mopping up the pressure, Leatherhead quickly re-took the initiative and pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Despite Reigate’s resilience, the visitors persisted and after 15 minutes pulled level when Hannah Baker provided a through ball for Liz Carleton to slot home from close range.

Having been pegged back at 1-1, Reigate responded strongly and enjoyed their best passage of play. With waves of attacks, Reigate threatened Leatherhead’s goal, calling keeper Ro Thomas into action to block a shot, whilst the back line showed resilience putting in timely tackles to deny the home side the chance to strike. As the second half progressed both sides pushed for a winner and were forced to accept the draw as the final whistle blew. Whilst the score-line was a fair reflection of the more balanced second half, Leatherhead were disappointed not to have taken advantage of their dominance and put away their chances in the first half.
Leatherhead remains in 5th place, on superior goal difference alone. With a two week break now from league duties, on their return Leatherhead can take confidence in the chances they create but will need to improve on their clinical finishing, as they face opposition placed above them in three of the last four fixtures of the season.
